Ashgrove House
A thoughtful renovation and addition that reconciles a century-old rowhome with the needs of a modern family.
Respecting What Was Already There
Ashgrove House began as a renovation of an existing rowhome, and much of the design process was about deciding what to keep. Original brick, moldings, and proportions were preserved wherever possible, anchoring the new work in the character of the original house.
A New Addition That Steps Back
A modern addition at the rear introduces larger openings and a more informal living space, deliberately set back and detailed differently from the historic front. The contrast makes clear what is original and what is new, rather than disguising the addition as something it isn’t.
One House, Two Rhythms
Moving from front to back, the house shifts from formal to relaxed, from traditional proportions to open-plan living. That shift in rhythm gives the family both the character of an old rowhome and the openness of a contemporary home, without asking either to compromise.
