Birchwood Commons
A courtyard-oriented multifamily building that trades a double-loaded corridor for shared outdoor space at its center.
Building Around a Shared Courtyard
Birchwood Commons organizes its units around a central courtyard rather than an internal corridor, giving every home a more direct connection to daylight and fresh air. The courtyard becomes an informal gathering space, used for everything from morning coffee to neighborhood cookouts.
Efficient Units Without Feeling Compact
Careful planning allowed each unit to feel generous despite a modest footprint, with tall ceilings, deep window openings, and simple, uninterrupted floor plans. Storage and mechanical spaces were consolidated to keep living areas as open as possible.
A Quiet Presence on the Street
From the street, Birchwood Commons reads as a single, restrained volume rather than a cluster of separate units. Brick and standing seam metal keep the material palette calm, letting the building settle comfortably into its residential surroundings.
